Chapter Recap: New Brunswick

With our current executive based in New Brunswick, many meetings occurred during the year in leading the provincial chapter launches and organizing Atlantic Canadian programming.

  • Inaugural BEAA TALK | NB was hosted by Melissa Wakefield at EXP Architects in Saint John, New Brunswick.  
  • Coinciding with Atlantic Canada’s Architecture week, and also World Architecture day, The film “City Dreamers” by Director Joseph Hillel was screened for the public at the Imperial Theatre in Saint John, NB.
  • Building Equality In Architecture Atlantic (BEA Atlantic) launched to great success our first BEA Continuing Education Retreat weekend titled: Balance: Designing your own roadmap at the Algonquin Resort in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, New Brunswick, September 27-29th, 2019. Continuing education programming formed the backbone of the thoughtful weekend dedicated to the cross pollination of knowledge and experience between peers and mentors. Education programming included leading guest speakers Robyn Tingley, Diversity Evangelist. Author. Full Force Feminist from GlassSky Inc., Marilyn Orr from Capacity Building Coaching and Tanya Chapman, Experienced Human Resources and Public Affairs Executive of The Chapman Group.

Chapter Recap: Nova Scotia

  • BEAA | NS launched in January 2019 with a party at 2 Crows Brewery, featuring readings by Halifax’s poet laureate Dr. Afua Cooper
  • BEAA Talks were hosted by Susan Fitzgerald (FBM) and Jennifer Corson (Solterre Design)
  • BEAA Film Series launched during the NSAA Spring Forum with the film Making Space: 5 Women Changing the Face of Architecture by Amici Films. Our second film was City Dreamers by Joseph Hillel
  • In November BEAA hosted a Brainstorming and Ideas session to discuss challenges and opportunities of our industry in Atlantic Canada

Chapter Recap: Prince Edward Island

  • PEI Launch June 21st at the River Shed in Oyster Bed Bridge which was paired with the AAPEI AGM. There was a group oyster shuck, music by Nick Doneff, door prizes and introductions by the BEAA executive committee.
  • PEI had a good representation of Islanders at the BEAA Retreat, consisting of both architects and engineers
  • BEAA | PEI formed a has committee of 5 professional from around the island
  • BEAA | PEI has laid the groundwork for collaboration with Engineers PEI Women Group and Construction Association Women’s board to do group events – including our first BEAA talk in March of 2020

Chapter Recap: Newfoundland and Labrador

  • The chapter representative for BEAA | NL Megan Burt was able to attend and participate in the BEAA Retreat in September. This paved the way for crucial networking to get the NL chapter started.
  • BEAA | NL Chapter launched in October with a presentation of the firl City Dreamers in association with the NLAA and
